The Electronicon Home Video Game Tournament
How do you describe a home console video game tournament? It's basically just a bunch of people sitting around a TV, talking trash, goofing on one another, while trying to beat each other at a video game, right? Well, that's everything that the Electronicon Home Video Game Tournament will be, except for one more thing: this one's for keeps.
Each of the winners in the Electronicon Home Video Game Tournament will recieve name recognition in the 1998 edition of The Official Book Of Video Game And Pinball World Records by Twin Galaxies founder Walter Day. This guarantees that the best of the video gamers attending Electronicon will have a chance at the ultimate bragging rights: immortality in print.
We're also designing a way cool certificate, suitable for framing, for each of the individual winners of the events, and we're also considering doing something REALLY cool for the overall winners of the single and multiplayer tourneys (the person who places highest in the most events). If that person is the same person, well, we'll just have to make them God or something.
We'll be having both 1 player and multiplayer competitive tournaments at Electronicon, and here are the events you can look forward to:
1 player events:
Kaboom!-Atari 2600
Can you catch the bombs before they fall to the ground? We don't think you can...
Frogger-Atari 2600
We gave the platform choice on this event a lot of thought, considering every possible console version, but in the end, we came home to the Parker Bros., 2600 version. It just feels right.
Turbo-ColecoVision
With that nifty steering wheel! 'Nuff said!
Centipede-Atari 5200 (with Trak-Ball!)
This one FLOORED people at RGVC-Con in Dayton, OH last year. I hope you've all been practicing...
Demon Attack-Atari 2600
This one was a last-minute choice, but I predict it will be one of the hottest contests here. GREAT game, and among the best for the 2600.
Pitfall-Atari 2600
OK, call me selfish, but I've never seen someone finish Pitfall! I've gotten 31 prizes out of 32 a few times, but NEVER finished it. I've become aware that there are maps, walk-throughs, etc. for the game available on the 'net, but how many of you can play a PERFECT game of Pitfall every time, with a crowd watching you, to boot?
Super Breakout-Atari 2600
Getting some of that paddle action going again...classic, classic stuff here.
Jr. Pac-Man-Atari 2600
We HAD to include a Pac-Man, so we picked the hardest one we could find. Heh-heh-heh-heh...
Multi-player events:
Warlords-Atari 2600
To be quite frank about it, this event right here is THE reason we're doing a tournament. The GREATEST multiplayer game ever (stand up and take notice, Bomberman fans!)
Pong-Super Pong
Yes kids, it's time for some good, wholesome Pong! To be played on Atari Super Pong consoles, recommended by Arton Zimot, the Pong King, for their superior playability.
Mr. Do! Battle Mode-SNES
We were first introduced to this variation of Mr. Do! at RGVC-Con, and we fell in love. Two Mr. Do's on the screen at once, battling for cherries and such!
Asteroids 4 Player Battle Mode-Atari 400/800
A lot of people requested Asteroids as a tournament event...well, here's what we're giving you. 4 players onscreen, can you avoid the rocks AND avoid being taken out by your opponents? Only the strongest will survive this event.
Joust-SNES (Williams Arcade's Greatest Hits)
No explanation needed.
Track And Field-Atari 2600
With those cool controllers...it's BUTTON MASHING TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bomberman Battle Mode
We're still firming up the platform this event will be played with, but it'll be listed in this space as soon as it's 100% certain.
and finally...
Space Dungeon-Atari 5200
Special "team" tournament...1 person controls movement, the other person fires. Pick yer partners!
If you'd like to sign up for the Electronicon Home Video Game Tournament, which is FREE to congoers, drop us a line with your name, days you'll be attending, and games you're interested in participating in. The advance notice will be greatly appreciated, as it speeds up tourney preparation on-site.
